This month, we are promoting the Write the Governor Campaign. We are focusing on sharing our support videos, writing letters to the Governor of Georgia, and getting signatures on Ky’s petition. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW), Survived and Punished, Project NIA, Dean Spade, and CeCe McDonald, Freedom Overground now has an amazing promotional video that we hope everyone will share.
Take Action: Community Self-Defense (Brought to you by BCRW)
We know from the successful campaigns to free Joan Little in the 1970s to the more recent campaign to free Marissa Alexander that grassroots mass mobilizations work. That’s why the Ky Peterson Defense Committee, including support from organizations Freedom Overground, Survived and Punished, Black and Pink, and Southerners on New Ground, are organizing to free Ky from prison.
NYC student activists are collaborating with Freedom Overground and Survived and Punished on a letter writing campaign to demand that Georgia Governor Nathan Deal pardon Ky and release him from prison.
If you live in New York City, you can join these activists at a letter writing party next Wednesday, August 16.
If you don’t live in NYC or you can’t make it next Wednesday, check out the Freeing Ky Support Guide from Freedom Overground to organize a letter writing party in your own community and learn about other ways to support Ky and others locked up in prison. You can also learn more by visiting the Freedom Overground website. Please use these resources and share them widely.
If you are on social media, you can help build momentum to support Ky’s freedom by posting a photo of yourself with a message of solidarity, using the hashtag #Justice4Ky and tagging @KyPeterson1 on Twitter and The Free Ky Project on Facebook.
Don’t Write Me, Write the Governor!
…By now, word of the recent parole decision has spread. They do not want me to be released until July 2021, but I will continue to push for my freedom. With this being said, I hope to continually be active with all who would like to continue writing me. However, if you are thinking about writing me, PLEASE, write Governor Nathan Deal first… I’m asking that anyone who thinks I should be out, write to the people who are in a position of power. Flood their mail boxes with letters. Sign my petition and make Governor Deal aware of the injustices that have happened and are still happening in his state. As much I love receiving mail from everyone, it would mean so much more if your time, resources, and stamps were used to help me gain my freedom…
Words of Ky P
We are asking that everyone participate in our Write the Governor Campaign from now until the end of 2017. You can do this by signing our Petition to the Governor requesting Ky’s release and by writing a letter to the Governor, privately or in a group letter writing event.
If you are writing a personal letter, please be sure to include the following:
- Ky’s full name, GDC #, and facility – Kenyota Peterson (1000961001), Pulaski State Prison
- Facts and information that you feel the governor needs to address regarding Ky’s Case and why he should be released.
- Your name (optional) and a return address.
While we prefer personal letters, some folks might not know what to say, click the link below for a downloadable copy of a sample letter:
Please send all letters to :
