As the Advocate reported on April 13th, Ky was placed into protective custody on the very day that they published his 4 page feature article online. The facility claims that he was sent to lock-down for fighting with another inmate, yet he received no disciplinary report for the “fight” . It is also part of Pulaski’s standard operating procedure to hold a hearing withing 96 hours of being placed in lock-down. He did not attend any hearing.
While Ky admits that he was in an argument with his bunk-mate, we are not sure that his placement in lock-down was a direct result of the situation, since the facility followed NONE of the SOP when they removed him from his dorm.
For some time, Ky has been very vocal about being transgender. He spends a lot of time with other inmates, sharing information and resources, in attempt to educate other trans men about their rights. He says that it’s important to let everyone know that hormones CAN be made available to them, further saying, “She (the Warden) can ignore me, but she can’t ignore us all.” We believe that the administrators at Pulaski may have placed him in lock-down as retaliation for communicating with the press. With all the negligence and failures in policy, the last thing Warden Grant wants is to be under the media’s spotlight.
Ky sent a message that he would like for me to share with everyone:
I would like to thank everyone for all of the support that and love that you are showing me. It means so much to me to know that people actually care and are concerned about me and my situation. There were so many time when I just wanted to give up and let the system have its way with my life. To me, my life ended when I was incarcerated and labeled as an inmate or a number. So, to know that people out there actually care means a lot to me. I am very thankful for everything that you guy have done and are in the process of doing right now. I know that it is truly a blessing to have all of the love and support that I am getting now. Once again thank you so much each and everyone of you. I am really honored that people are taking the time out of their busy days to look at my blogs. May God bless each one of you for you caring and helping the ones who can not help themselves. Be safe and take care of yourselves. ~ Words of Ky
It takes a strong individual to rise above your circumstances, help others, and do the right thing, which is why I am so honored to be apart of his life. It is an honor to love him, support him, stand by him, and fight for him everyday.
